In an interview with the German newspaper Sächsische Zeitung, Alexandra Spitz-Oener shared her insights on Germany’s labor market and economic outlook. Despite current challenges, she emphasized that “many companies are still doing well,” with the number of employed people in Germany reaching a record high.
Prof. Spitz-Oener addressed the pressures on the labor market caused by structural changes in the automotive sector but expressed optimism: “As recently as 2023, German electric vehicles performed exceptionally well internationally.” She also pointed to growth opportunities in digitization, medicine, and pharmaceuticals as key drivers for strengthening the German labor market.
Discussing demographic changes, she highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue. With an estimated five million workers retiring over the next five years, she called for new workforce strategies, including increased immigration and incentives for older workers to extend their careers.
