The ROCKWOOL Foundation Berlin – Institute for the Economy and the Future of Work (RFBerlin) is pleased to announce the RFBerlin Conference on Worker Co-determination and Governance, taking place in Berlin on 17 of September 2025.

This conference brings together researchers interested in the economic implications of worker co-determination and organizational governance. We invite submissions of innovative papers that explore how workers are involved in governance structures and how these structures shape economic and social outcomes.

Topics of Interest

We welcome theoretical, empirical, and historical contributions on topics such as:

  • The determinants of adopting worker governance institutions
  • Effects on productivity, wages, absenteeism, health, job satisfaction, and workplace quality
  • Intersections with innovation, environmental outcomes, and broader ESG measures

Keynote Speaker

Benjamin Schoefer, is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of the Macro Labor Center for the Study of Aggregate Labor Markets, Policies, and Institutions at UC Berkeley and the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE). He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), the Bundesbank (German Central Bank), and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH). Additionally, Professor Schoefer serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Monetary Economics.

His research primarily focuses on economic policy and applied economics, with a particular emphasis on labor market dynamics and macro-labor interactions. Professor Schoefer’s work spans topics such as wage rigidity, unemployment insurance, collective bargaining, hiring subsidies, and the macroeconomic consequences of labor market policies. His research combines theoretical modeling with empirical analysis, often utilizing administrative data from European countries.

Submission Guidelines

We accept full papers or extended abstracts, with preference given to full papers.
Submissions should include a 250-word abstract.
Each individual may submit one paper as a presenter, but may be listed as a co-author on additional submissions.

Travel and Financial Support

Participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation.
However, limited support is available upon request for early-career researchers and those from middle- or low-income countries.
